Rendering beauty from fire is a new path for me. As with most people, my trajectory through life has not been linear. It is a journey wrought with starts and stops, frequently looping back upon itself and wandering false passages. This is life as it should be. It isn’t the final destination that makes a life worthwhile, but rather the time spent meandering along the many roads that fill the days between birth and death. It’s the people we choose to travel those roads with that make a life worthwhile.
I have always had a maker’s heart and a wanderer’s soul. I have worked as a civil engineer, and teacher, but that isn’t what I am. It’s what I do.
I am a wanderer. The pull of the wilderness is a constant ache, that I satiate by running and hiking mile after mile upon woodland trails. When I discovered trail and ultra running, it was like a great awakening. The farther I run, the higher the elation that I feel. The beauty of the outdoors both calms and rejuvenates me. It is something that I share with my little family of three. Our happiest memories are not expensive vacations, or extravagant gifts. Our happiest memories are the hours we spend on the trails with packs on our backs and the sun on our face. It is this love of the beauty of nature that inspires much of my work in the studio.
I am a maker. I was always a maker, in a sense. As a civil engineer, I designed dams and roads and bridges; but it was not fulfilling. If anything, it seemed to run counter to my love of the natural world. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered the beauty of natural gemstones and raw metal, and the amazing feeling of molding a plain sheet of sterling silver into something that evokes feeling and emotion, much as the beauty of the natural world does. I love searching for stones that are unique, and investigating where they come from. Whether its from a turquoise mine in Arizona, or the mountains of Pakistan, each stone is a window into the beauty that exists all over the world.
I hope you will take a minute to visit my shop and find something that speaks to you. I also hope that you will take the time to enjoy the beauty that exists right outside our doors.
